Economics Olympiad

Economic and financial literacy
for the next generation!

What is the Economics Olympiad?

Too few education systems recognize the powerful and lifelong impact which an early education in economics and finance can have on everyone’s daily lives. The Economics Olympiad is the brainchild of the Institute of Economic Education (INEV) in the Czech Republic. Its purpose is to inspire interest in economics learning among teenagers. Today the Economics Olympiad is run in 7 countries. In 2023, Economic Fundamentals Initiative (EFI) was delighted to bring the competition to a further 8 countries which saw 9,000 students enroll.

How does the Economics Olympiad work?

The Economics Olympiad consists of up to 4 rounds - school, regional (optional), national, and international.

  • School Round

Open to students with no economics learning! Students sit an online test. The top students advance to the next round.

  • Regional Round

Online or offline depending on the local situation.

  • National Round

    A one-day event for the country’s 50 top contestants.

  • International Economics Olympiad

The 5 best students from each country will compete in the international round.

Prepare for success!

The Economics Olympiad is for high school students aged 14-20. No formal economics education is required to take part. But!…You can help yourself get on the road to success by reading EFI’s free edition of “Common Sense Economics” and browsing through our exciting library content.

The test was highly engaging and it emphasised basic logic over memorising. Through the Olympiad I discovered that economics is rooted in logic and common sense, making it practical for everyday life. I also see it as a solid foundation for beginner entrepreneurs.

Student, Kyrgyzstan
Years of economic populism spread by politicians or through social networks are in dire need of a counterbalance. I am delighted that, thanks to the Economics Olympiad, students have the opportunity to challenge their economic mindset and investigate the real reasons behind wage levels or the drivers behind international trade.

Monika Budzak
Director of the Economics Olympiad in Slovakia

To tell the truth, I wasn`t really familiar with economics. I never took an interest in it or even tried to explore it. However, "Common Sense Economics" book totally turned my understanding of economics upside down. Now I can say with confidence that everyone can enjoy learning economics.

...I think the Economics Olympiad is a really worthwhile activity. Economics and social sciences, in addition to being fun and beautiful, are very important for our societies.
